Reappropriating Strength and Redefining the Strong Black Woman Narrative: Clinical Implications for Counselors
This continuing education course draws on Black feminist theory, intersectionality, and interpretive phenomenological research to examine the Strong Black Woman (SBW) narrative and its impact on Black professional mothers. Participants will explore the genealogy of the SBW schema, understand how it has been internalized and performed, and evaluate its consequences for mental health and well-being. The course emphasizes reappropriation as a liberatory strategy, helping counselors develop culturally responsive, non-pathologizing interventions that empower Black women to redefine strength and wellness.
